We're not maintaining this blog at the moment, and are attempting to run the user group via Meetup.com. Head over to http://www.meetup.com/PerthDotNet/ and check it out.

Also - if you ever meet the scum who domain-squat perthdotnet.org*, please be sure to pass on our regards.

June Session - Welcome to Production with Graeme Foster

Hey all,

After seeing this excellent talk at YOWWest I've asked Graeme to come along on Thursday and give it again. Come along!

What: Welcome to Production
When: Thursday June 4th, 5:30pm
Where: Level 1, Raine Square Tower, 300 Murray Street PERTH
Cost: Free. All Welcome

Welcome to Production
Have you designed / developed a system using the “best practices” of the last few years? Are these acronyms familiar - ORM, SOA and DDD? If so there’s every chance that when your system makes it to production, it’s going to suffer.

We're going to investigate the often forgotten life of a system - when it’s deployed into the real world and the original developers move on to pastures new. It’s a collection of my experiences from the last 9 months working very close to a live system which I designed a few years ago using the then, best practices.

We will consider issues which are often overlooked or not thought about in too much detail at the development phase like performance, concurrency, scalability and deployment. We’ll see ways we can track problems down, sometimes before the end users even see them. We will think about how to deal with them or even side-step them. And we will consider how we may have avoided them by taking different architectural paths early on.

By the end of the talk I’m hoping you’ll see that delivering a system to production is just the beginning of it’s life, and have some ideas on how to keep it happy and healthy whilst it grows!

About Graeme
Graeme’s IT passion was first stirred with a 1Kb ZX81 in 1983 at 8 years old. He’s now had almost 20 years of commercial experience using .Net, Javascript, Java, and VB, as well as writing Lisp neural networks at Uni and having Objective-C ios apps in the AppStore.

He is currently working at Cash Converters under the title “Spanish Software Developer”, and his duties have included taming a large production system, bending and contorting it to run in Mexico.

No May Meetup

Many apologies for the late notice but there will not be a .NET Community of Practice in May.

You can still get tickets to go to YOW West! in a couple of weeks though.

You should also be checking out DDD Perth which is happening in late August. Registration is open!

And if that wasn't enough, there's even a free Virtual Conference happening in May for Aussie developers which you may want to check out: http://www.anzcoders.com/

Plenty to keep you busy. I have a session tentatively pencilled in for June but I'd love to have a bunch more to choose from so if you're looking to present on anything or if there's anything in particular you want to see, please let me know!

Next meeting moved to April 9th

Hey all,

With people going away for the Easter long weekend we have decided to move the April meeting back a week to Thursday 9th April.

It's going to be worth waiting for though.

My favorite definition of an expert is "someone who has made all the mistakes and learned from them before you started".
In their session, Rhys Campbell and Colin Scott (people I would consider experts), are going to talk about the mistakes that they have made over the last decade+, particularly the ones that seems so common in "enterprise" development shops.

Quote: It's got drama, self-deprecating humour and all the romance you expect from the name "generic repository"

What: Misstakes We Have Made: Lessons from over 20 years combined .NET experience with Rhys Campbell and Colin Scott
When: Thursday April 9th, 5:30pm
Where: Level 1, Bankwest Place (300 Murray Street)
Cost: Free. But you must RSVP

Please note that you must RSVP for this event. Building security have requested that we provide an attendee list for our events and to do so you must RSVP though the Meetup group. As a part of the RSVP process I am asking for your name (to add to this list). Any concerns/questions please let me know (michael.minutillo@gmail.com).

Have a fantastic Easter and I hope to see you next Thursday!

World's Greatest Shave

Our glorious leader Mike (and colleague Ben) are shaving off for the Leukaemia Foundation. In Mike's case that's some 5 years of extensive growth (which takes some serious planning) which may never again be seen in it's current glory. If you want to wave goodby to Mike's follicular assets, or marvel at the stunning transformation, come along. Better still, sponsor their team (Hairy Dudes) using the link below, either because you care about funding research into blood cancer, or just to ensure they go through with this insanity.
When: Fri 13th March, 4pm
Where: Rigby's Bar, St George's Terrace
